I just came across this useful blog-post for students seeking to (one day) do a PhD in linguistics. It looks into how to network, find funding, etc. at the international level. There are a number of UK-specific national things you can do, too, such as joining the LAGB (the Linguistics Association of Great Britain) and/or BAAL (the British Association for Applied Linguistics), becoming a marker for UKLO (the UK Linguistics Olympiad) and the like.
